My New Radio Show: The Expedition

September 16, 2015 at 2:09 pm

The Expedition on Dash Radio

I am producing and hosting a brand new radio show on the Dash Radio Network.  “The Expedition – A Journey Into Sound with Frank Foreal” is all about uncovering music, new and old, from all over the world. New bands, producers, DJ’s, as well as vintage finds. I’m very excited to be producing this show alongside fellow music junkies, Derrick Ah Sam and Michelle Choug, who I’ve spent many hours (and years) with talking about music that we love.  The Expedition airs every Friday at 5pm PT /8pm ET, with a re-broadcast every Saturday at 7pm PT / 10pm ET.

You can listen to our recent archives via our new Mixcloud page, and make plans to tune in this week.  We could also use your support via all social media networks: find us on Facebook/Instagram/Twitter @EXPEDITIONRADIO.  If you enjoy what you hear, please like and share!

That being said, this is a bittersweet moment, as I will be stepping away from my duties on Soundwaves Radio, a great program that I have had the honor to work on the past 20 months. Without Sean Osborn‘s generosity, bringing me on the airwaves with him, Val The Vandle, and Francesca Harding, I could not have earned the confidence and experience to lead me to this point. I am so grateful to you all!

Been really enjoying the soul jazz artists coming out lately.  After really diving into the Joomanji catalog, I heard about this new band, Space Captain, from Brooklyn NY.

Melding elements of hip hop, soul and psychedelic rock, the Brooklyn-based group are set to release their first double A-side “Easier”/ “Remedy”, with Tru Thoughts on July 24th, ahead of a debut EP later this year.

Interview w/ Roger Bong of Aloha Got Soul

May 26, 2015 at 1:00 pm

Processed with VSCOcam with hb1 preset

Last week, we aired a conversation I had with Roger Bong, a DJ who took his passion for Hawaiian records and turned it into a great blog, Aloha Got Soul, which lead to him starting his own re-issue label under the same name. Gearing up for their second release on June 22nd, Roger talked about his blog, establishing relationships with local musicians, and why he felt a re-press of his first release was good for everyone.

FREE DOWNLOAD: “Let’s Go Get ‘Em” New Orleans Brass & Funk Mix

I am fortunate to have worked on this mix with my friend and colleague, Derrick Ah Sam.  In February 2013, Derrick reached out to me about executing a mix he had been thinking about for a while.  After countless hours, nights after work, and weekends of getting together for a few hours a day, we released the final product in April 2014, just in time for Jazz Fest in New Orleans.  The response has been amazing and this is only the beginning.

Download at: www.neworleansbrassmix.com

This is a sampling of some of the sounds of the city that has truly moved my spirit since my first visit to New Orleans for the 2005 Jazz Fest. Here, we’ve reinterpreted and presented this music in a way that is new and fresh (thanks to a very technically challenging and amazing mix by my good friend and DJ, Frank Foreal), yet still pays proper respect to the culture and the folks that create this music.

This is truly a project of passion for me. As a matter of fact, I have so much love for New Orleans, it can be challenging to find a way to accurately translate and explain my feelings for this place…

Thus, I found the best way to express my affection is through music and this project, “Let’s Go Get ‘Em”, is my personal love letter to the city of New Orleans.

Happy listening!

Sincerely,

Derrick Ah Sam

Co-Founded by Derrick Tabb, snare drummer for the Rebirth Brass Band, The Roots of Music fills a void in music education programs in New Orleans schools.

The Roots of Music empowers New Orleans youth aged 9-14 through music history and theory as well as instrumental instruction and ensemble performance preparation. They also provide educational & academic support, and mentorship while preserving and promoting the unique musical and cultural heritage of the city.

Marching bands were once an integral part of New Orleans middle schools, but many schools discontinued their music programs for this age group after Katrina. Today, The Roots of Music serves over 100 students, making up a full marching band that has successfully paraded the city since Mardi Gras 2009.

By donating to this organization, you can help empower the next generation of musicians who will continue to carry on the cultural legacy of the music we’ve presented here.

Soundwaves Radio: Interview with DJ Platurn

I had a great conversation with Oakland’s DJ Platurn a few weeks back, after he made a visit to LA for Boombox’s Native Tongue Appreciation night.  I scooped up his new mix CD, “So This is De La Heaven, PT2,” which is an amazing De La Soul tribute, and we talked in depth about this project (which took him over a year to make).  Listen and enjoy!
