New single from Benjamin “Those Memories/This Time”

June 8, 2015 at 10:07 am
benjamin Big up to Cherries records for always putting out quality funk.  Check out the new 7-inch from Benjamin. From Cherries Records:
BENJAMIN comes back full force with two back-to-back modern soul burners.  Side A, ‘Those Memories (Sneak Up On Me)’ is a mid-tempo live funk track, originally created for the infamous Toulouse Soul Club party in southern France. With a driving guitar/bassline combo, slinking funky drums and swelling synth lines, BENJAMIN encourages you to leave the past behind, never looking into the “rear view” mirror of love. On the B side, Cherries’ co-founder, DJ Shred One, serves up a stripped down extended edit version of ‘This Time’. Deeply influenced by the Chicago “steppers” sound, ‘This Time’ is a smooth and sultry quiet stormer, custom made for those who like their dance music sexy, sophisticated, cold and grown. It is the perfect 45 for the cool out hour, when it’s the lovers’ turn to take over the dancefloor.

Choice 37 feat. Lauren Santiago “Back To Cuba”

October 13, 2013 at 9:00 am
Choice37 I heard my boy DJ A-1 play this at Scenario tonight (a local friendly getdown), and this transported me to about 2006, when my man Choice 37 was putting out some seriously solid material (he has since moved to Korea to pursue music).  The amazing vocal talents of Lauren Santiago can be heard around the break.  Latin, b-boy, funky goodness right here.  It has a danceable vibe with heavy drums, but then hits you with this really soulful keyboard/vocal breakdown that just stops you in your tracks.  So glad I heard this tonight! Free Download here.

Electric Cowbell Records

It's as simple as searching for someone's record online, that I stumble on a label that's pushing some amazing vinyl.  Case in point: Electric Cowbell Records out of New York.  I went on their site looking for this Superhuman Happiness 7", and came out with a handful of other 45's.  Can't complain.  I damn near fell out of my chair when I heard this Sway Machinery track.  Had to get it.

Analog Players Society “I Can’t Wait”

Analog Players Society "I Can't Wait"Stumbled on this group, killin the reggae covers.  Not only do they have their 45's selling for SUPER CHEAP, but they also have a free download of their steppers version of Vince Guaraldi's "Christmas Time Is Here."  You can't go wrong with a reggae version of anything, and it's good to see Redbud putting this out.     Peep their cover of Nu Shooz's "I Can't Wait," featuring one of my favorite vocalists, Cecilia Stalin.

Little Shalimar – The Best Thing Since Chin Chin

January 6, 2012 at 8:00 am
I posted on Facebook today that I was waiting for a band to make me as excited as I was when Chin Chin's "The Flashing, The Fancing" was released in 2009.  As I decided to write this post, I checked out Little Shalimar's homepage and what did I discover? Torbitt Schwartz, the brains behind Little Shalimar, is also founder of Chin Chin.  I thought there were striking similarities in the vocals.  Chin Chin's sound is much more dance oriented, with some other instruments involved.  I was instantly impressed with Torbitt's new release, The New Pneumonia Blues, and couldn't wait to share it with you.  Unfortunately, no upcoming shows in Los Angeles, but maybe we can convince to come out for no money.  This is just good, fun, rock n' roll, and I can dig it. You can download the new Little Shalimar EP for free on bandcamp.  Check him out on Facebook as well.  "Winds of Wackness" is definitely my favorite track.
